In February 2021, the world’s crude steel manufacturing production for the 64 countries was 150.2 million tonnes (Mt) which rose 4.1% year on year reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel)
Overview
The chart below shows the total crude steel production in the world, China and ROW (the rest of the world) between Sept 2019 and Feb 2021.
Global crude steel production reached 1,864.0 million tonnes (Mt) for the year 2020, down by 0.9% compared to 2019 due to COVID-19 pandemic. But in 2021, we can see stronger recovery in global demand of steel fabrication
Crude steel manufacturing by region
The 64 countries included in the below table accounted for approximately 98% of total world crude steel output in 2020. Regions and countries covered by the table:
- Africa: Egypt, Libya, South Africa
- Asia and Oceania: Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Korea, Taiwan (China), Vietnam
- CIS: Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan
- European Union (27)
- Europe, Other: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Turkey, United Kingdom

Crude steel manufacturing by top 10 steel-producing countries
- China – the world’s biggest steelmaking country is estimated to have produced 83.0 Mt in February 2021, up 10.9% on February 2020.
- In contrast to increasing output in China, India produced 9.1 Mt, down 3.1%.
- Same as India, Japan production decreased by 5.6% with 7.5 Mt
- The United States produced 6.3 Mt, down 10.9%.
- Russia is estimated to have produced 5.7 Mt, down 1.3%.
- South Korea produced 5.5 Mt, up 1.2%.
- Turkey produced 3.0 Mt, up 5.9%.
- Germany produced 3.1 Mt, down 10.4%.
- Brazil produced 2.8 Mt, up 3.8%.
- Iran is estimated to have produced 2.3 Mt, up 11.5%.
