What is metal casting?
Metal casting is a process in which a molten metal is poured, or injected into a custom-made mold that contains a negative impression (i.e., a three-dimensional negative image) of the intended shape. After the metal cools and hardens, the finalized metal part shape is then ready to be finished. This can be accomplished through additional machining, and other processing techniques that are used to achieve desired tolerances and finishes.
Metal casting is a modern process with ancient roots. It is arguably the earliest and most influential industrial process in history. It’s used to make many of the metal objects used in our daily lives: automotive parts, train wheels, water pipes, lamp posts, school bus pedals, and much more. Plus, metal casting foundries rely on metal recycling as a cost-efficient source of raw material, significantly reducing wasted scrap metal that might end up in landfills.
