STEEL STRUCTURE INTRODUCTION

As sustainable and flexible construction becomes the standard of industry from 2026, steel structure remains the top solution for industrial factories and modern engineering projects. At AM Industries Vietnam, we anticipate these trends and provide high-quality steel structure solutions that meet your specific needs and follow strict international standards.

WHAT IS STEEL STRUCTURE?

Steel structures are formed from structural steel components like beams, columns, angles, and channels. These steel materials are engineered with precise chemical compositions and high strength to support heavy loads. This ensures every project—from industrial facilities to large infrastructure—remains stable, durable, and safe over time.

STEEL STRUCTURES CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS FOLLOWS:

1. Frame Structure: The most popular choice for buildings, using a network of beams and columns to provide strong support and flexibility in design.

See the difference between structural steel columns and steel beams here.

2. Truss Structure: Composed of triangular units that allow for long spans without intermediate supports. Ideal for roofs and large open spaces like stadiums or bridges

3. Arch Structure: A curved design that effectively transfers heavy loads to the foundations. It’s perfect for bridges and aesthetically pleasing architectural landmarks.

4. Grid (Space Frame) Structure: A 3D system of interconnected bars that can cover vast areas with minimal material. Commonly used for airport terminals and exhibition halls.

5. Cable Structure: Uses high-strength steel cables to support the structure. This is the go-to solution for suspension bridges and lightweight, modern roof designs.steel-structure-classification

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF STEEL STRUCTURE?

Steel structures offer several advantages compared with traditional materials:

  • High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Steel is incredibly strong but lightweight. This means you can build taller structures or longer bridges without adding too much “dead weight” to the foundation.
  • Excellent Ductility: Steel can bend and deform slightly before breaking (ductility). This “warning sign” provides extra safety, especially in areas prone to earthquakes.
  • Predictable & Precise: Unlike other materials, steel’s behavior is highly predictable. We can manufacture components with extremely narrow tolerances, ensuring a perfect fit on-site.
  • Fast & Economic Construction: Most parts are prefabricated at our factory. This mass production speeds up the assembly process, saving you time and labor costs.
  • Sustainability: Steel is 100% recyclable. You can strengthen, modify, or even reuse steel components many years later, making it a “green” investment.

Because of these benefits, steel structures are widely used in factories, warehouses, bridges, mining facilities, and energy infrastructure.

While in general, the disadvantages of steel structure are as follows:

  • Fire Sensitivity: The strength of steel is reduced considerably when heated at temperatures commonly observed in a fire; therefore the treatment of fireproof is needed.
  • Corrosion Risk: The steel structures when exposed to air and water as in the case of bridges, there is a big possibility of corrosion and it needs regular maintenance.
  • Initial Cost: Steel can be more expensive than some materials upfront. However, the long-term savings in maintenance, speed of construction, and durability often outweigh the initial investment.

At AM Industries, we apply advanced galvanization or epoxy coatings to ensure your project stays durable even in harsh environments. Learn more about our reliable fabrication and coating solutions here!

WHY SHOULD BUSINESSES CHOOSE STEEL STRUCTURE?

For modern enterprises, choosing a steel structure is more than just a construction preference—it’s a strategic decision to optimize capital and operational efficiency. While the technical benefits are clear, the business value lies in:

  • Fast-Track to Revenue: Every day spent on a construction site is a day without production. With prefabricated components, the facility can be operational months ahead of traditional buildings, allowing for a much faster Return on Investment (ROI).
  • Operational Scalability: Business needs change. Steel’s modular nature allows you to expand warehouses or modify the production line with minimal disruption, ensuring the facility grows alongside business.
  • Low Long-Term Ownership Cost: Thanks to high durability and protective coatings, the lifecycle cost of a steel building is significantly lower than wood or concrete, which may require more frequent structural repairs.
  • Asset Liquidity: A steel structure is an asset that retains value. Its 100% recyclability and potential for relocation mean that even at the end of its initial use, the material still holds significant market value.

A designer should take care of the following important points:

  1. A section selected should be available in the local market. Unusual sizes and rare rolled sections cost more and should be avoided
  2. In steel structure buildings, the various elements should be compatible with the joints. If a large number of different shapes and sizes of elements are designed, it will be practically difficult to fit the members, and connections will be a problem. For example, in a continuous beam of a framed building, the designer may provide different sections in various spans for the economy. But this arrangement will generate connection problems and look unattractive
  3. The steel structures in exposed conditions require frequent maintenance. Therefore, the elements of such structures, e. G. Bridges, steel water tanks, etc. Should have access to the exposed elements
  4. Transportation facilities for built-up sections should be explored before designing them.
